On this page you will be able to see, watch and listen to the mathematical connections we make in Kindergarten.  Some of the best connections are those that happen authentically.  Young children are naturally curious and make connections easily.  Math is everywhere in the natural world.  I hope you enjoy learning about the connections we make and share along the way!

Today we were looking at the pattern we discovered while looking at our calendar during Number Corner Time.  

One of the children noticed how the shapes all lined up!  Wow!  Then another observation was made about how the shapes make slanted lines.  I took this opportunity to introduce some new math vocabulary, rows, columns and diagonal lines.  Wow!  The children started using these new words to describe the shapes and patterns they noticed.  Afterwards a child created rows and columns of unifix cubes!

Later another child created a mathematical idea on paper using rows and columns!  So neat!

Today during our Dot Day Celebration the children discovered that many dotted cookies made large dots!  Other words that we used to describe the cookies were circular, gigantic, huge and colorful!  Great observations!

Making Connections With Rows In Kindergarten!

This afternoon during our "REST" time the children collaborated together to make a row of chairs!  Later on the children continued to make rows using lots of different materials in Kindergarten!

What Makes A Traingle A Triangle?

One of the neatest things about making mathematical connections is that when we are Thinking Mathematically they seem to appear!  The children came up with a "proof" for triangles, amazing! 

Today we were talking about how we think mathematically when we work on math ideas.  The children really loved this.  I thought that you might enjoy listening and watching to some of their mathematical connections.

The children created a graph using their shoes!  This was a great way to reinforce how we create and design our thinking!  The children then had an opportunity to use "math talk" to describe what they observed/noticed.  This was another great opportunity for us to do a mathematical dyad!  Great math thinking happening!
